Thin film (PLD) and Sputtering Services

The Laboratory of Thin Films, in use from 2010, is a Scientific Service of ICMAB, being Dr. Florencio Sánchez the scientific responsible. The laboratory offers the capability of fabrication of complex oxides thin films and heterostructures combining oxides and metals. The deposition techniques are pulsed laser deposition (PLD) for oxides and sputtering for metals. Currently there are two PLD set-ups installed, and in 2012 both systems will be connected to a chamber with several sputtering units.

Description of the Pulsed Laser Deposition technique

PLD is a physical vapour deposition technique that uses ultraviolet laser radiation to vaporize material that is transferred to the substrate. The plot in Figure 1 is a sketch illustrating a PLD set-up. The pulsed beam of an ultraviolet laser (usually an excimer) is focused on a ceramic target placed in a vacuum chamber. The combination of pulsed irradiation, high photon energy, and high energy density can cause the ablation of the material. Ablation refers to the etching and emission of material under conditions totally out of the equilibrium. The plasma created expands fast along the perpendicular direction of the target (see the photography in Figure 2). A substrate is placed front the target, and inert or reactive gases are usually introduced during the deposition process.

The technique is very suitable for oxides, and compared with other techniques is particularly useful to obtain films with complex stoichiometry and to grow epitaxial films and heterostructures. Moreover, PLD is highly versatile to optimize the deposition conditions of new materials, and the films can be grown in relatively fast processes. These characteristics favour the use of the technique by research groups having interest in different materials.

Equipment

The Laboratory owns two PLD deposition systems (see photographs in Figures 3 and 4) and the beam of an excimer laser can be directed to each of them (see the sketch in Figure 5). The systems were fabricated by Twente Solid State Technology. The two multilayers in a single process. Both substrates and targets can be loaded via the load lock. The base pressure in both PLD systems is below 10-8 mbar, and the substrate heaters permit high deposition temperature (up to 900 ºC) under oxygen or argon pressure. One of the chambers integrates a reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) system for growth dynamic studies and real-time control of the deposition. It uses a 35 kV electron gun and two-differential vacuum stages that allow monitoring the growth under high-pressure up to 0.5 mbar. As an example, Figure 6 shows the variation of the RHEED specular spot intensity during layer-by-layer growth of around 4 monolayer La0.66Sr0.33MnO3 film on SrTiO3(001), with the patterns of substrate and film.

In 2012, the PLD chambers will be integrated in a cluster-like structure, including distribution and storage chambers, and metallization chamber with several sputtering sources. The storage chamber will permit the connection of a UHV vacuum suitcase to transfer Omicron-type plates, also compatible with the PLD set ups.

Magneto-Optical Spectroscopy of Nanostructured Magnetic Materials

Magneto-optical materials are nowadays intensively researched because of potential applications in optical communications or data storage. An important aspect of this research field is to understand how their properties evolve with the wavelength of the probe light. The student will be trained on using magneto-optical spectroscopy to analyze the properties of nanostructured magnetic materials as well as nanometer-thick magnetic films as a function of the light frequency.

Imaging ferromagnetic and ferroelectric domains with submicron resolution

The data in electronic devices can be stored permanently in magnetic or ferroelectric domains. A direct visualization of these domains is a prerequisite to understand the evolution of their spatial distribution under the application of external fields (magnetic or electric). The candidate will contribute to develop and make use of advanced optical microscopy (confocal) with polarization contrast to image ferromagnetic and ferroelectric domains of thin film structures as well as nano-objects with a lateral resolution well below the micrometer. The project will allow the candidate to obtain formation on modern optical microscopy techniques.

Nanometric Magnetic Tunnel Heteroepitaxies

Spintronics is one of the most advanced technologies to overcome present limitations of conventional electronics. Magnetic materials are at the heart of spintronics and progress requires development of new materials and concepts. We are currently developping spin filters. We offer to contribute to the ongoing research. The student will be trained on using Pulsed laser deposition and sputtering techniques to grown epitaxial layers of oxides and metals. This activity will be combined with advanced structural characterization and atomic-force miscroscopies.

Oxide superlattices by pulsed laser deposition with reflection high energy electron diffraction

New artificial materials can be created by exploiting properties derived of interfaces between two materials. Superlattices, i.e., thin films multilayers type A/B/A/B/… with extremely thin A and B layers, maximize the effects of interfaces over bulk effects. Particularly relevant are complex oxides superlattices, permitting enhancement or even creation of ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity. The fabrication of oxide superlattices is challenging and requests advanced tools and methodologies of thin film growth. The state-of-the-art pulsed laser deposition (PLD) with real-time control by reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) facilities at ICMAB (http:// www.icmab.es/icmab/scientific-technical-services/thin-films/equipments.html) are the optimal set-ups. The student will investigate the thin film growth mechanism in complex epitaxial multilayers formed by ferroelectric (FE: BaTiO3) and paraelectric (PE: SrTiO3 and CaTiO3) films. N x (n x FE / m x PE) multilayers (N = 1 to 50), with n and m ranging from 1 to 10 unit cells. The student will conduct detailed analysis of 1) RHEED patterns, and particularly of the specular spot intensity oscillations, and 2) atomic force microscopy (AFM) topographic images and X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns.

Atomic control of single crystalline oxide surfaces for tailored epitaxial growth

Accurate manipulation of the surface of single crystalline oxide substrates is being used recently to tune the epitaxial growth of subsequently deposited films (see for instance R. Bachelet, C. Ocal, L. Garzón, J. Fontcuberta, and F. Sánchez, Conducted growth of SrRuO3 nanodot arrays on self-ordered La0.18Sr0.82Al0.59Ta0.41O3(001) surfaces, Applied Physics Letters 99, 051914 (2011), and references therein). The single crystals are typically perovskite oxides, and the main characteristics considering the use as substrate are morphology and chemical termination. Morphology is characterized by terraces (around 100 nm wide) having a single or two chemical terminations separated by steps (around 0.2 or 0.4 nm high) that can be highly disordered or form well ordered patterns. The objective is to control the chemical termination and the steps-terraces morphology of single crystalls usually used as substrates: SrTiO3(001) and LSAT(001). The student will perform chemical and thermal treatments of the substrates and detailed characterization of the surface by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The engineered substrates will then used to grow epitaxial films of ferromagnetic and ferroelectric oxides, and the impact on the growth mode and film properties will be determined.

Mapping electric transport and capacitance at nanoscale

Nanodevices as used in present and future electronic technologies require mapping of materials’ electric and dielectric properties at nanoscale. We aim to contribute to this development by measuring the dielectric response of nanometric thin films of selected insulating materials. The final goal is to determine to what extent substrate-induced strain may induce radically new properties, such as ferroelectricity, in the films. The student will participate in thin film characterization by atomic force microscopy (AFM), current sensing AFM and capacitance microscopy.

Magnetoelectric coupling in multiferroic thin films and superlattices

The aim of this project is the magnetodielectric characterization of multiferroic materials in thin film form. Multiferroics are functional oxides in which at least two ferroic orders coexist (for instance, ferroelectricity and ferromagnetism), and are interesting for a variety of applications, such as magnetic memories or tunable high-frequency devices.

The research involves ferroelectric and dielectric measurements at cryogenic temperatures and under magnetic fields, of thin films and multilayers candidate to display multiferroicity.

The work will include also the correlation of the obtained magnetoelectric properties with microstructure, nanostructure and synthesis conditions, so that the student will adquire experience on the characterization of dielectric and ferroelectric materials, on the physics of multiferroic oxides and on other materials science aspects as structural characterization and thin film fabrication.

J. Appl. Phys. 111, 013904 (2012)

http://dx.doi.org/10.1063/1.3672839

A systematic study of electric transport through thin (2–8 nm) CoFe2O4 films deposited on epitaxial

SrRuO3 bottom electrodes was performed by conducting atomic force microscopy (CAFM).

Experimental procedures to investigate transport through thin insulating films by CAFM are critically

revised, and the potential of CoFe2O4 films for the use as spin-filtering barriers is assessed. It is concluded that, at room-temperature, a non-tunnel channel significantly contributes to the electric transport, thuslimiting the spin-filtering efficiency.

FErroelectric and DiElectric

Our FErroelectric/DiElectric laboratory is specially designed to characterize all kind of functional properties of ferroelectric and multiferroic thin films

Laboratory lead and designed by Dr. Ignasi Fina

The following characterizations can be performed:

All these characterizations can be implemented in three experimental setups, to perform respectively room temperature, high and low temperature, or cryogenic magnetoelectric measurements:
  1.  Room temperature measurements: a table with micropositioners (Signatone S-2 and S-725) and tungsten needles of several diameters and hardnesses is used. A Faraday box is available to shield environmental noise when required.
  2. Low and high-temperature probe station: a 4-probes station able to reach from down to 5 K to ca. 1000 K with access to laser illumination.
  3. Cryogenic measurements (T>1.6K): they are performed inside a Physical Property Measurement System Quantum Design Co.) with a Multifunction probe suitably adapted (shielded cables with low thermal losses: Cryo cable – type SS, Lakeshore Co.). This system contains a superconducting magnet which allows to carry out all the electric measurements under magnetic fields up to 9T, thus allowing magnetoelectric characterization under high magnetic field.
You can have access to this facility through the nffa.eu project

Advanced Optical Imaging

We also make use of the interaction of polarized light with magnetically and electrically ordered matter for high-resolution optical imaging of domains. We are developing an infrastructure for advanced optical characterization based on confocal microscopy with the focus on complex domain imaging with sub-micrometer resolution of magnetoelectric systems.

Magnetophotonic and Magnetoplasmonic Materials

We exploit the interaction of light with matter to obtain tailored spectral photonic responses. One strategy is based on 2D and 3D composite complex materials –photonic crystals– in which the matter is structured at the scale of the visible of near-infrared wavelengths. In this case, a photonic band structure emerges in which the optical responses dramatically increase at light wavelengths defined by the geometry. On the other hand, we exploit plasmon responses at metal/dielectric interfaces to obtain enhanced optical properties at specific frequencies. We thus combine magnetic materials with either photonic crystals or plasmon resonators to produce systems with customized magneto-optic spectral responses.

Functional oxides on Silicon

Silicon is the most fundamental technological material for electronics. At the same time, oxides display a remarkably variety of functional properties, including ferroelectricity or magnetism. Thus, a successful coupling of functional oxides with silicon has an enormous potential for new applications in electronics. A serious challenge issue is to match the dissimilar (structurally, thermally, and in general chemically reactive) oxides and silicon in hybrid structures. We have recently initiated the research on the integration of functional oxides on silicon, with focus on ferroelectric and magnetic oxides. For that purpose, we exploit atomic growth control with in-situ RHEED monitoring, as well as advanced microstructural (TEM) and functional (magnetic, magneto-optic, ferroelectric) characterization. Specific objectives in progress include integration of i) ultrathin (a few nanometer thick) ferroelectric perovskites and ferrimagnetic spinels on silicon, and ii) ferroelectric perovskites on silicon membranes.

Multiferroics and Magnetoelectric Systems

The cross-coupling between magnetism and ferroelectricity affords very promising avenues for the development of novel electronic devices. The feasibility of electrical control of the magnetization and viceversa, the control of the electrical polarization with magnetic fields, is the basic step towards new memories with multi-bit storage capabilities (in which the information is encoded by the magnetization and polarization states) or to dissipation-less operation of magnetic memories. We investigate both single-phase multiferroics as well as composite magnetoelectric materials in which magnetic and ferroelectric phases are coupled, either in 3D nanocomposites or 2D thin film structures. Our methodology is based on the study of magnetoelectric coupling exploiting advanced ferroelectric characterization under magnetic fields as well as magnetometry and magneto-optic imaging under electric fields.

Magnetic Oxide Thin Films

Spin dependent electron transport in magnetic materials is the basic physical mechanism for spintronics. For the integration in spintronics devices, magnetic materials have to be structured at the nanoscale, either as thin films or in nanostructures. It is important, therefore, to have a complete understanding of the physical properties of magnetic structures at such small scales. Our focus is at the investigation of the properties like magnetization, spin polarization, or conductivity for nanometric thin films and nanostructures. Our methodology, in addition to conventional magnetotransport characterization, includes also conductive atomic force microscopy as well as magneto-optics to analyze electronic transport at optical frequencies.

Electronic/Structural Reconstructions at Oxide Surfaces and Interfaces

The physical properties of bulk materials, e.g., magnetism or electronic transport, may be dramatically modified at their surfaces or at the interfaces with other materials. In particular, oxides offer an ideal platform to analyze such phenomena related to the effects of charge transfer, strain or chemical segregation on nanoscale regions –typically a few unit cells around interfaces and surfaces–. A particular spectacular example is the high mobility transport found at the interface of two oxide band insulators, LaAlO3 and SrTiO3, which may be the gateway to novel emergent oxide electronics. Our goal is to understand the physics behind the phenomena appearing within these nanometric regions for eventual new applications and devices. By using a variety of single crystals as structural templates, we grow oxide thin layers –usually a few nanometers thick– with tools that allow the growth with atomic control precision. Our multidisciplinary approach includes a range of sophisticated experimental methodologies, including pulsed laser deposition with in-situ RHEED, advanced magnetic, dielectric and magneto optic characterization, Atomic Force Microscopy, NMR, STEM-EELS, and X-Ray Synchrotron Radiation.

Electron Microscopy

Electron microscopy is a fast-evolving field and new exciting findings can be expected with the advent of recent developments such as spherical aberration correction, monochromated guns or new advances in magnetic imaging techniques such as electron magnetic circular dichroism at the nanometer scale, just to name a few. Real space probes capable of looking at matter with atomic resolution and single atom sensitivity are a reality that provides new googles we can use to look into the nanoworld, and beyond.

Some of challenges in materials physics can only be studied using advanced electron microscopy techniques. Imaging and spectroscopy in the aberration corrected scanning transmission microscope can unravel point defects that trigger a dilute magnetic behavior in superconducting films, help to understand the role of oxygen vacancies and strain in cobaltite thin films, identify spin state superlattices or surface magnetism in nanoparticles, and can also achieve the mapping of minimal lattice distortions associated with light O atoms near interfaces that change drastically the macroscopic properties of complex heterostructures. The combination of electron microscopy, spectroscopy and atomic-scale quantum mechanical calculations represents a unique and extremely powerful tool for resolving the complex mysteries of materials.
