By using light as a probe we have gained insights into the nature of the magnetism of rare-earth doped YIG films. More specifically, by using magneto-optics, we have found that the iron ions and rare earths (Ce in our case) contribute differently to the global magnetism of doped YIG samples, i.e., we could distinguish the magnetic hysteresis loops contributed by the iron ions from those coming from the are earth ions.
